Adopted Building Codes and State of Michigan Information

The State of Michigan requires all jurisdictions, including the City of St. Joseph, to enforce the following code editions:

2015 Michigan Residential Code effective February 8, 2016
2015 Michigan Building Code effective April 20, 2017
2023 Michigan Electrical Code Part 8 effective March 12, 2024 (2015 MRC)
2021 Michigan Mechanical Code effective March 12, 2024
2021 Michigan Plumbing Code effective March 12, 2024
2015 Michigan Energy Code (Commercial) effective September 20, 2017

In addition, the City has adopted and enforces the following codes:

2009 Uniform Fire Code
2015 International Property Maintenance Code (as amended by Sec. 8-96 of the Code of Ordinances)

“Before the Michigan building code, the Michigan residential code, the Michigan plumbing code, the Michigan mechanical code, the Michigan uniform energy code, and the Michigan rehabilitation code may be enforced, the director shall make each Michigan-specific code available to the general public for at least 45 days in printed, electronic, or other form that does not require the user to purchase additional documents or data in any form in order to have an updated complete version of each specific code, excluding other referenced standards within each code.”

Copies of these documents will be available for viewing at the Inspection Department, once provided by the State of Michigan.
