Tree Planting
The City of St. Joseph prides itself on being a "tree community." Incorporated in the management of the of city Right-of-Way (street), Park and public space trees, the city practices an annual Tree Planting program. Should a street tree require removal by the city, it is common practice for the city to replace the tree with a new planting in the general area of the removal. The vast majority of city tree planting typically takes place in the late-Fall, and then again in the Spring on an as-needed basis.
City residents with right-of-way tree planting requests adjacent to their property may contact the Department of Public Works using the online request below or by calling 269-983-6341. An authorized representative of the city will come out to inspect the space for the proposed tree and decide if it meets the criteria to be added to the city's planting list. Approval of new street trees is based on the available size of the tree lawn, as well as the proximity to underground utilities, overhead utilities, street signs, traffic lights, power poles, driveways, fire hydrants, walkways, etc.
Only tree species found on the City of St. Joseph Approved Right-of-Way Tree List will be planted, and can be found in the supporting documents viewed here.
