There are a variety of elected officials and volunteer groups that help make St. Joseph a great place to live, work and play. These groups give life to our sense of community and the promise for a brighter tomorrow.

If you are interested in serving as a member of a City Board, Commission or Authority, applications may be filled out on-line, or obtained from the City Clerk by calling (269) 983-6325.



GROUP  
City Commission

Meetings: alternating weeks
City Hall

Members: Mayor Robert Judd, Mayor Pro Tem Michael Garey,  Commissioners Fran Chickering, Mary Goff and Jeffrey Richards.   

Openings: City Elections are held every odd year in November.  Filing deadline for nominating petitions is 4:00 p.m. the twelfth Tuesday prior to the odd-year primary election.

Airport Authority

Meetings: 3rd Thursday, monthly
9:30 am, Southwest Michigan Regional Airport

Alternate: Gretchen Gilmore

Board of Appeals

Purpose: To hear appeals, variances and special exceptions and make decisions necessary for the enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance.



Meetings: 3rd Thursday, monthly

Board of Canvassers Purpose - To meet after each City election to canvass the votes and certify the results.

Meetings: Thursday following election, 9 am

Brownfield Redevelopment Authority

Purpose: – The Authority was established to promote the revitalization of environmentally distressed areas of the City of St. Joseph, through the utilization of tax increment funds for the purpose of eliminating contamination on development sites.



Meetings: 1st Thursday of even-numbered months, 4 pm

Members: Mary Goff, Deborah Koroch, Frank Walsh, Tim Zebell

Cemetery Board Purpose:  To direct improvements, care, management and preservation for all City cemeteries in good order, direct the expenditures of all monies for the cemetery and make and enforce regulations relative to burial and any other matters pertaining to the cemeteries.

Meetings: last Thursday, monthly
9 am, Riverview Cemetery office

Members: Tom Cooper, George King, Beth Schroeder.
Alternate: Dave Koch.

Construction Board of Appeals Purpose: To consider appeals from the decisions of the officials charged with the enforcement of the construction and maintenance codes.

Downtown Development Authority

Purpose - To promote economic growth to sustain a viable commercial district in the downtown area and is a financing entity through which public improvements can be planned and constructed.

Employees Retirement System Purpose - To supervise and manage the general administration of the City’s retirement system which involves the responsibility for decisions regarding investments and assets, selection of actuary, approves assumptions used, in accordance with the Pension Ordinance.

Municipal Officers Compensation Commission Purpose - To review and determine salaries of  Mayor, Mayor pro tem and City Commissioners.

Meetings: As needed every two years.

Parks Advisory Board Purpose - To act as an Advisory Board to review and make recommendations of sculptures, monuments, fountains, etc. for placement in all City parks.

Planning Commission Purpose - To make recommendations to the City Commission regarding rezoning requests, zoning ordinance text amendments, zoning map changes, variances for signs, Special Use Permits and site plan review and approval for new developments.

Recreational Harbor Authority

Property Maintenance Board of Appeals

Purpose: To hear property maintenance appeals and make decisions necessary for the enforcement of the International Property Maintenance Code, as adopted by the City.

Purpose – To review and tentatively approve the assessment roll; and hears and makes decisions on appeals by taxpayers from valuations made by the City Assessor.
