The Engineering Department provides engineering services and project management for roadway, sanitary sewer and storm sewer projects in the City. This includes the oversight of consultant engineering services for large infrastructure projects while smaller projects are typically handled in house. The City Engineer serves as the City's Street Administrator and TwinCATS Technical Committee Representative and is also a member of the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and Water Contract Implemenation Committee. The City Engineer is the sole full time employee of the Engineering Department, however, a summer time intern is typically hired to assist with minor projects during the construction season.

Day to Day Services include:

  • Handling water, sewer and roadway related contructions permits in the public right-of-way.
  • Planning, prioritizing and seeking funding sources for future infrastructure projects.
  • Oversight of Engineering Consulting Services
  • Construction Progress Meetings and Site Inspections of ongoing construction projects.
  • Responding to Citizen Concerns including Periodic Updates on Construction Progress.
  • Administration of the City's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permits.
  • Achriving of Infrastructure Related As-Recorded Drawings.
  • Plan review and approval of infrastructure related elements of new developments.
The St. Joseph Water Filtration Plant

The Water Plant filters, treats and delivers an average of 3.6 million gallons of water daily to customers of the water system. The system serves approximately 13,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers from the City of St. Joseph, Lincoln Charter Township, Royalton Township, St. Joseph Charter Township, Village of Shoreham, and Village of Stevensville.
