The Code Enforcement Office is an arm of the Inspections Department and provides day to day, proactive code enforcement services for the City of St. Joseph. Daily services include:

This department is not tasked with the enforcement of the following ordinance conditions but links have been provided to assist you if your complaint involves the following conditions:

To help us more effectively respond to citizen property maintenance and nuisance complaints please utilize the following procedures:

  • Please state the conditions that are of concern (i.e. peeling paint, tall grass, etc.)
  • Please give the property address and location (i.e. 123 Main † rear yard)
  • Please provide any contact information if you wish for the department to contact you. Please note that citizens may report nuisance complaints anonymously.

In addition to these daily services, the department conducts an annual property maintenance inspection program which examines the exterior conditions of all structures (both residential and commercial) within a given geographic area. Once code deficiencies have been identified, written notification is sent to individual property owners requiring the completion of property maintenance repairs (i.e. structure painting, replacement of broken windows, mending of fences, etc.) by a set deadline. This program was recently implemented in response to citizen quality of life concerns regarding the maintenance of properties within the City of St. Joseph. The goal of this program is to protect citizen property values and encourage continued investment in our community.

If you have any questions about these topics, please contact the City and we will be glad to help you.
